Some of us at Joyalstack.com admit that we practically soil our topit when confronted with big, heavy, oversized magic books. We love 'em. And when you have a passion for buying magic by the pound, you can't do better than the bicep-building girth (and magical brilliance) of Harry Lorayne's four-volume Apocalypse collection.

Beginning in January 1978 and continuing for 20 years (!), Lorayne published Apocalypse as a monthly magazine/newsletter featuring some of the greatest close-up creators of the day. Just pick a few names from Volume One alone and you'll see what we mean: Michael Ammar, Frank Garcia, Paul Harris, Ken Krenzel, Jeff McBride, Tom Mullica, Jon Racherbaumer, Dai Vernon and LOTS more. Each 12-page issue was a little like pulling an all-nighter with some of the sharpest thinkers in the business.

The variety of effects even outdoes the number of creators. Ya gotcher coins. Ya gotcher cards. Ya got rings, ropes, matches, rubber bands, book tests, mentalism, balls ...

Oh yeah, these books have balls. The four volumes pass our Husky Man test in a BIG WAY. Each of the hard-bound books (five years of Apocalypse issues per volume) boasts over 700 pages and more than 500 items! And that page count doesn't include an extra 20 pages containing comprehensive indexes (indices for you English majors) of tricks and creators. (Just for the heckuvit, we put all four volumes on the bathroom scale. Yipes, you're getting nearly 18 POUNDS of magic here. We're in heaven.)

Not only is this an incredible cross-section of magic for two decades, you also get the always opinionated and sometime irascible editorial comments of Lorayne, himself, including the feud he and Apocalypse co-founder and Genii Magazine publisher Richard Kaufman carried on for years in public ink. (We understand it has since cooled off.)

Apocalypse is great magic, great opinions, and great magic history. Did we mention that it's also one of the biggest (literally!) magical bargains around?
